Current Green Team 2010

Start 2010

Building on the success of Green Team 2008 the WorldSkills Australia National Skills competition was again home to the Green Team!  Student volunteers from event management teamed up with students from university environmental courses to find out how sustainable are the categories at a WorldSkills competition.Under the guidance of the lead auditor, ARUP, the Green Team conducted interviews with each of the skill areas and gathered data that became part of the Environmental Audit report, and established benchmarks & recommendations for improvement.

A project partnership between Dusseldorp Skills Forum & Worldskills Australia.

One of the keys to becoming more sustainable is the dedication and leadership of the project designers and category convenors.During the 2010 competition the Green Team interviewed those categories who put their hands up to be considered for the award for ‘Outstanding Leadership in Showcasing Skills and Sustainability’.

These awards were introduced to recognise actions taken by project designers and category convenors on issues such as sustainable practices, efficient use of materials, water and power management, and wastage within the competition. In 2008 Vehicle Painting were the inaugural winners.

altWinners 2010 - Bricklaying

Congratulations to the category of Bricklaying and Chief Judge, Troy Everett.  This year saw Bricklaying considered sustainability into the design of the project and the delivery of the competition.  This helped to achieve significant savings in water, especially through the application of an innovative water reuse device designed specifically for the competition.  Saving the bricks and mortar from the speed challenge for reuse also reduced waste.  Eliminating toxic chemicals as well as using a tank to settle clay from the water for reuse was also noted.

The field was extremely tough this year and congratulations must also be extended to Cookery, Detailed Joinery, Hairdressing Painting & Decorating & Web Design.

WorldSkills International

Did you know that the WorldSkills International competition held in 2009 in Calgary, Canada introduced the concept of the Green Team?  Did you know that the international projects now feature aspects of sustainability within their technical descriptions?  And that Beauty Therapy won the first ever Skills for Sustainability award at the international level in WorldSkills?
