| CENTRE EDUCATION PROGRAMME: destinations |
When asked where students are now the
response is rather candid; some have returned to the education system,
some are in training, a few of the young mums are onto their second or
third pregnancy, some are in work, others have apprenticeships, a few
have wound up in jail, and sadly more than just a handful’s physical
presence can be seen only in the memorial posts erected at the rear of
the Centre’s grounds.

There are of course the heart-warming anecdotes that help to reinforce
why spaces like the Centre Education Programme have been provided to
young people today. One such is former student Rachael McAulay. Her
modest account of her transition from the Centre Education Programme to
‘adult life’ is given as part of the staffing rundown on the Centre’s
website: http://www.learningplace.com.au/

"Hi
my name is Rachael and I am an ex-student who is now the teacher-aide
at Centre Education Programme. Since leaving in 2000 I have completed
Certificate III in Counselling and Certificate III in Education Support.
I have been working here for about one year. I have enjoyed and learned
from all the experiences I have had. When I heard about this position I
had to go for it.... I have always wanted to work here so that I could
help make a difference in some young people's lives. I have also
learned that everybody needs an education, it's important.
My interest is in helping people and working in the special needs
class. I have been working with Linda Houston in her class and I have
become very interested in this subject. In the near future I would like
to enrol in a course for special needs so that I can become a teacher. "
