| The island: Literacy & numeracy |
| As part of its VCAL program, The
Island offers the Certificate in General Education for Adults (CGEA), which is undertaken with the Literacy and Numeracy instructor. According to the staff the students are “taught” using the principles of adult learning where honesty and self discipline are a priority. Each student is expected to reflect daily in the journal about their learning and progress in all workshops, and consider how they could have done things differently. Certificates I, II & III in General Education for Adults (CGEA). This is the only “desk work” and the workshop is equipped with (donated) computers and has internet access. As Holdsworth (2000) reminds us about young people in general and at risk youth in particular, gratification delayed can lead to gratification denied. The students therefore do work that is entirely relevant to their lives now and not some time later and spend much time heatedly discussing and debating current issues of concern. |
