If I hadn’t found out about The Island I would probably be on the dole by now. (Student in Broadribb, 2004, 31) |

In any year the following destinations are fairly typical of the approximately 100 students enrolled:
• 25% continue enrolment into the following year
• 20% take up apprenticeships
• 12% enrol in a TAFE course
• 25% ongoing employment
• 6% are still looking for work
• 6% return to regular school
• 6% other.
The Island ’s record of success in placing students is currently more than 95%, with most students following on into paid employment. Some students even choose to go back to school to complete their secondary education whilst others move into suitable TAFE courses. Work ready students are also assisted into apprenticeships or other suitable employment (The Island, 2005).
Broadribb concludes that students at The Island benefit in three very different but not mutually exclusive ways:
1. Using the new found respect and support they rebuild self esteem and regain a sense of self-worth and self confidence in their abilities and their futures. No longer alienated or dropped out” these young people ‘create a positive role in society for themselves through their own endeavour and commitment, … creat[ing] a future where none existed [previously]’
2. Getting formal qualifications within the new VCAL framework or certification takes them into further TAFE study
3. Direct entry into apprenticeships and employment as preferred entrants. (Broadribb, 2004, 53).
