and supports them in the transition. |

The Galilee School is an alternative education program for young
people at-risk which provides accredited educational programs in a less structured
learning environment. Students complete school work (modularised) in the morning
and choose electives in the afternoon including automotive, art, outdoor education,
indigenous studies, music and fishing.

| This project offers the complete VCAL certificate which has four

| TranzEd uses practical learning activities and projects in Yr
10 and 11 such as film making, garden building, car restoration and furniture
building to engage students. These hands-on activities are delivered in
an integrated curriculum model together with skills-based theory and written

by the Senior Years team of the SA Dept of Education and Children’s Services
to help classroom teachers inquire into students’ connection and engagement
with the curriculum, and to identify students who need support to remain connected

| Green Corps is an Australian Government program for 17-20 year
olds delivered by the not-for-profit organisations Job Futures and Greening Australia. The
program features teams of 10 young people working with a team leader for 6 months
on projects of environmental and cultural significance. During the 6 months,
participants receive on-the-job accredited training in Conservation and Land
Management (Certificate I and II). |

The Maryborough Alternate Plan (MAP) engages educators, business
and the local community to deliver a wide range of alternative options to support
young people at risk. The plan is overseen by an officer (employed at a local
level) who identifies the needs of these young people and engages education,
community and business people to assist with program development and implementation.
A range of different programs are on offer which focus on skills and building
self esteem. For example, the local chemist runs ‘Secret Chics Business’ which
is a personal development program aimed at young women. A number of mentoring
programs are also offered through local community volunteers. |

| Glendyne offers an educational program in an alternate farm
setting with 15 full time staff and over 50 volunteers and mentors. The Centre
uses a positive behaviour program to work with disconnected and high needs youth.
The Centre works mainly with youth referred through Dept of Communities, Juvenile
Justice and those suspended from schools. |

| A very successful publishing project was carried out in 2005
in conjunction with UWS teaching students through the NEXT GENERATION Project
organised in partnership with the Dusseldorp Skills Forum. A magazine called
Student’s Say and a book of Children’s Stories, ‘Stories from
the Shed’, has been produced. |

| Community VCAL’s Certificate of General Education for
Adults has expanded from a class-based focus into a community-based project.
This has been achieved through inter-agency links and partnerships between the
University of Ballarat, the Local Learning and Employment Network and the local
Community Health Centre. The project aims to broaden the students’ life
experiences through experimental learning - participating in camps and excursions.
Incorporating the expertise of workers from the local agencies is a major component
of the program. |

| Power (Parents Overcoming Work and Education Restrictions) is
a program for pregnant and parenting teens. The program coordinators offer support,
guidance and advocacy for the young people in the program. The POWER Program
commenced in 2001 and since 2004 has been funded by the Commonwealth Department
of Family and Community Services. The program also operates a JET-funded creche
on site. Participants can bring their young children to school with them where
children are cared for by qualified child-care workers. The POWER Program provides
options to break the welfare cycle and encourages students to realize their own
potential. |

| The Hervey Bay ETRF initiatives have created a strong support
network for young people. Services include the support and development of alternate
programs in the region; the development of the Hervey Bay youth sector network;
investigation into youth transport issues; the development of the Hervey Bay
Youth mentoring program; and supporting the role of youth support co-ordinator. |

students use their skills to address real-life problems. Service Learning Provides
an avenue for students to demonstrate skills and abilities at levels that are
comfortable and non-threatening. Students with learning differences have an opportunity
