The Tasmanian Media Skills project was implemented from February - August 2005. Supported by the Dusseldorp Skills Forum and linked to the Tasmanian Leading Lifelong Learning: International Education Conference 2005. It involved schools utilising community radio as a means of providing educational pathways for young people from alternative and mainstream education.
Project Outline (JAN 2005)
The Tasmanian Media Skills Project will promote and implement media skills learning as a means of generating a broader skill base in young people across Tasmania. In a general context, it will promote the adoption of media skills as an alternative mode of education through a partnership with community radio.
Spanning six months, the project will connect secondary schools and other education providers with community radio stations across Tasmania and with the assistance of a project manager, teachers across the State will be provided with training, resources and assistance to link media skills to their student’s curriculum and assessment.
Over 100 students from a number of schools will produce short audio pieces and radio programs that will go to air on community radio stations and will be further promoted through other networks including the ABC and SBS around Australia.
As an outcome, young people from across Tasmania will contribute to in the 2005 Leading Lifelong Learning: International Education Conference and use it as a forum to both showcase their media skills and critically engage with the themes of the conference by interviewing, reporting and participating in proceedings.
At the end of the project we expect media skills education to be recognised as a valuable education tool and for both schools and teachers to have the necessary knowledge and resources to continue its application and development.
