UNWIRED AT CENTRE ED

As the Tasmanian Media Skills Project was bubbling away nicely down south, Project Manager Andrew Apostola travelled to Brisbane’s gateway city, Logan, to train four budding young disc jockeys in the radio program.

Centre Education Programme (Centre Ed) students John Hedditch, Andrew Lowe and Zack Pharr took part an intensive training workshop held at Centre Ed that was co-odinated through a partnership between the school, the Dusseldorp Skills Forum and community radio station Triple Z FM. Centre Ed was first introduced to the media skills concept at the 2004 Learning Choices Expo when Victorian-based educational program, SYN (Student Youth Network) FM, showcased the project to delegates. A considerable amount of interest was generated as a result, from which the Tasmanian Media Skills Project emerged.

Twelve months on and back in Brisbane the workshop was delivered over two-days, the first of which covered radio broadcasting techniques; from choosing engaging subject material right through to editing the stories to broadcast quality. Students were briefed in classroom-style sessions and took to the school grounds where they quizzed fellow classmates in mock interviews. Following a day of learning and practice, the journalists-in-the-making headed back to the studio to produce their stories to ‘on-air’ quality.

The comprehensive tutorial program saw the young men fit to cover the South East Queensland Regional Learning Choices Forum the following day in true professional style. As official ‘journalists’ at the Forum, they spoke with student teams from Queensland based programs, probing them on their interests both inside and outside of the classroom. John, Andrew and Zack then tromped back to the Centre Ed studio to cut their interviews, this time add a touch of their own personal flair by cutting in pieces of music they’d each composed.

The Centre Ed team will now head up the media skills component of the 2006 Learning Choices Expo.
