report in PDF format (196 K)
This report examines innovative employment
and labour market initiatives that have benefited young people,
particularly but not only young people at risk. Most of these are
locally based initiatives that address a number of challenges confronting
young people. In selecting case studies, the project identified
examples of best practice. This report was
specifically written for the National Youth Commitment.

Markets

The
project takes enterprise education out of the classroom and into
a 'real life' marketplace. For over four years students from three
schools have had an opportunity to develop skills and confidence
by preparing for and managing a stall at Queensland's most famous
country market.
Participating
schools share responsibility for the stall and use a variety of
approaches in sourcing or manufacturing products for sale, identifying
students to be involved and integrating student learning.

Teams of students worked on the planning and
construction of tables and benches for Boughton Park, Moree - creating
a long lasting outcome for the community - and at the same time
gaining a personal insight into career opportunities and their own
potential.

and increasing their opportunities for a successful transition from

Quick
Hut 2000

Australian Industry has long been shifting its focus from individual
to team approaches for both problem solving and productivity. Whilst
recognising the need for highly skilled individuals, industry and
business has acknowledged that even the best individual must work
with others to be truly productive.
Competing
against each other, time, material delays and budget constraints,
each team is asked to design, develop and construct a light weight,
highly transportable modular housing solution, for use primarily
in emergency situations in any one of a variety of socio-environmental
settings.
