Grey is the new GreenHelping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to address the challenge of sustainability in the workplace. DSF’s new mentorship program targets recently retired workers in order to create a network of experienced professionals who can consult SMEs on how to adapt their businesses to meet the sustainability challenge.

Secret Treasury Advice

On Friday February 1, 2008 The Sydney Morning Herald reported on ‘secret’ Treasury advice presented to the Rudd Government. In it, they had identified that climate change is ‘the single most pressing environmental, economic and social challenge this country faces’. In the same sentence Treasury urged the government to tackle the challenge of the ageing population.

The double challengeThe double Challenge

...there exists a huge opportunity to not only make sure new entrants to workforce have sustainability skills, but that older workers are also provided with the opportunity to re-skill, and there is a great need to engage small to medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the conversation on climate change…

Grey is the New Green is designed to act upon both challenges simultaneously: those workers recently retired who are able to utilise their vast industry experience will be targeted for participation. They will receive training on business sustainability and will be matched to work as ‘green mentors’ within the same type of business they have previously worked for. In this way our mentors will be able to provide meaningful advice and suitable solutions to the SMEs, and will engage the companies in the debate around sustainability.

The pilot project will be launched in April 2009 in Melbourne (VIC), in partnership with:
