The
project aims to conduct research into the transport needs
and issues of young Tasmanians and develop a Youth Transport
Strategy that recommends how these needs and issues may
be addressed. As part of its role in youth affairs, The
Office of Youth Affairs is coordinating the project, working
closely with the Passenger Transport Policy Unit of the
Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources. The
strategy applies to the whole of Tasmania but has a focus
on the specific needs and issues of young people in rural
and isolated areas. For the purposes of this study young
people are identified as people aged from 12 to 25
years.
This
project forms the first part of a two-part initiative. Once
the project has been undertaken, the second part of the
initiative will commence which involves the implementation
of one or more recommendations through pilots.
To
date, a review of national and international experience
and a series of consultations with youth groups around Tasmania
have been completed. A stakeholder workshop is planned for
early March 2003. It is expected that the findings including
the strategy document will be completed by the end of March
2003.
