Outcomes of the Tasmanian Youth Transport Study

The Tasmanian Youth Transport Strategy was launched by the Minister for Education, the Hon. Paula Wriedt, MHA on International Youth Day, Tuesday, 12 August 2003.

Young people and youth service providers throughout the State have consistently raised transport as an issue for young people in various forums. The Office of Youth Affairs was able to coordinate a transport project on behalf of the stakeholders with support from other government and non-government agencies.

Young TransNet

Here is an example of a great youth transport website in the UK. It provides links to other youth transport sites in England and has the results of some transport surveys they have done. Over 400 schools have registered for the survey which is about travel to school. The results can be viewed on-line.

There are also links to games, news and information about sustainable transport options and information for teachers and youth workers.

The site has a powerpoint presentation that you can download which explains all about the site.

"Young TransNet uses IT and the Internet to assist children and young people in transport research and action. The long term aim of Young TransNet is to increase walking, cycling and the use of public transport, and to reduce motor traffic."

Two wheels work: A good practice guide for developing and implementing Wheels to Work schemes
Lack of transport can be a major barrier to people living in rural areas when it comes to accessing training, education and employment opportunities. Wheels to Work (W2W) schemes provide an innovative way of overcoming those transport barriers - offering individuals their own transport solutions. This detailed guide aims to help those involved in setting up W2W schemes and features practical examples from existing initiatives. July 2002

Wheels to work: an evaluation of existing schemes
This study involved an England-wide review to identify the location and experience of existing rural-based W2W schemes. Following the review, an evaluation of the schemes was undertaken to identify example of both good and bad practice. This information was then used to inform a good practice guide (CA 108) for the development and implementation of W2W schemes. July 2002
